Northern Colorado Farmhouse for Sale

History

Northern Colorado Farmhouse for Sale

In 1885, a local businessman acquired a river bottom and land for dry farming here in Berthoud. That property quickly became one of the area’s first homesteads, boasting two working mills, a blacksmith shop and eventually, a farmhouse which was built in 1904.

In 1943, the homestead was taken over by a niece and her husband, Doyle and Lavesta Jones. The Jones owned the property until the Sommers, the current owners, purchased it in 2008, making the homestead one of Berthoud’s most well-kept gems, with many of the original buildings still standing!

The Renovation

Northern Colorado Farmhouse for Sale

When Mark and Jeannine Sommers purchased the farmhouse and its acreage in 2008, it was vacant and needed a lot of TLC. But after 13 years of love and hard work, it became the incredible property we know and love today! As owners of an architectural salvage and custom woodwork business in Berthoud, the Sommers were the perfect new owners to recreate the home with reclaimed artifacts and unique building materials from all over the world, including:

  • Custom-built cabinetry made from white oak flooring from an old mill in Missouri.

  • An artist-built staircase from salvaged wood and iron.

  • Great room ceiling and windowsills made with reclaimed wood from an old Dillard’s maintenance building in Kansas and a rail station in the Midwest.

  • A unique cast iron bathtub from a historic home in Fort Collins.

  • dining room and kitchen liquor cabinet that came from a 1600s stone wall building in Europe.

The Sommers also relocated some of the buildings on the farm and incorporated them into the home’s new design, including the original grain silo that now adds a great room and primary bedroom retreat.
